Shock Flashcards
What are the 4 types of shock?
Hypovolaemic,
cardiogenic,
obstructive,
distributive
3 signs of hypovolaemic shock
Tachycardia, reduced JVP, cold peripheries
3 signs of cardiogenic shock
tachycardia, elevated JVP, cold peripheries
3 signs of obstructive shock
tachycardia, elevated JVP, cold peripheries
3 signs of distributive shock
tachycardia (bradycardia in neurogenic shock), elevated JVP, peripheries warm
Describe what hypovolaemic shock is
Reduced intravascular volume resulting in reduced cardiac output
Describe what cardiogenic shock is
Intracardiac dysfunction resulting in reduced cardiac output
Describe what obstructive shock is
Extracardiac causes obstructing/restricting cardiac output
Describe what distributive shock is
Shock due to severe peripheral vasodilation
Causes of hypovolaemic shock
Haemorrhage,
trauma,
burns,
GI loss,
renal loss (DKA),
third space loss (eg. pancreatitis)
Causes of cardiogenic shock
MI,
arrhythmias,
aortic or mitral valve insufficiency
Causes of obstructive shock
PE,
tension pneumothorax,
pericardial tamponade,
constrictive pericarditis,
restrictive cardiomyopathy
Causes of distributive shock
septic shock,
anaphylaxis,
neurogenic
Management of Septic shock
- give O2 therapy
- take blood cultures
- give IV antibiotics
- give IV fluids
- check serial lactate
- measure urine output
