SHHS Year 11 Component 3 Learning Aim B Flashcards
What are the different types of physiological data?
Pulse rate
Peak flow
Blood pressure
BMI
What is meant by lifestyle data?
Smoking
Alcohol consumption
Diet
Inactivity
What does pulse rate measure?
The number of times the heart beats in one minute
What does peak flow measure?
Measures how well the lungs expel air, a low peak flow suggests narrowing of airways e.g. because of asthma or smoking
What does blood pressure measure?
The pressure of blood through the heart and around the body
What does BMI measure?
The proportion of body fat using measurements of a person’s height and weight
What are the risks of having a raised pulse rate?
Dizziness
Heart attack
Stroke
High blood pressure
What should the average resting pulse rate be?
Between 60-100 beats per minute
How can pulse rate be lowered?
Regular exercise
Healthy diet
Lower stress levels
Stop smoking
How does low blood pressure affect a person?
Dizziness and fainting
Low energy and feeling lethargic
What are the risks of high blood pressure?
Heart disease
Stroke
Heart attack
What can cause high blood pressure?
Unhealthy diet
Lack of exercise (sedentary lifestyle)
Being overweight
Stress
What is peak flow testing used for?
To assess the health of a person’s lungs and whether their airways are narrowed
What does a low peak flow indicate?
Asthma
Cystic fibrosis
Lung cancer
Emphysema
What are the ranges of a normal BMI?
18.5-24.9
What are the health risks associated with a low BMI?
Weakened immune system
Low energy
Osteoporosis (brittle bones)
Anaemia (low iron)
What are the health risks of a high BMI?
Heart disease
High blood pressure
Type II diabetes
Stroke
What are the risks of smoking?
Heart attack Cancer-lung, throat, mouth Respiratory problems Low fitness levels Infertility
What are the benefits of quitting smoking?
Increased life expectancy
Reduce risk of heart attack
Better immune system
What might prevent a person from quitting smoking?
Being addicted
Family and friends smoking
Lack of awareness of support
What is the recommended limit for alcohol consumption per week?
14 units
What are the risks of drinking too much alcohol?
Addiction
Liver disease
Heart disease
Cancer-liver, breast
What are the benefits of cutting down on alcohol?
Better physical health-reduced risk of cancer and heart disease
Weight loss (alcohol has a high calorie content)
Improved mood
Better sleep patterns
How much exercise should children and adults be doing every week?
Children-1 hour per day
Adults-2.5 hours per week
What are the risks of a sedentary lifestyle/inactivity?
Leads to obesity
Reduced mobility and joint pain
Muscle stiffness
Increased risk of heart disease and Type II diabetes
What are the benefits of exercise?
Maintain a healthy weight
Build strong bones and muscles
Boosts mood
