Sherif Flashcards
Method and results
22 boys aged 11 from middle class, white religious families from Oklahoma. Put into two groups (rattlers and eagles) they competed in competitions for prizes, this caused prejudice and discrimination such as name calling, fighting and stealing
How did sherif first attempt to resolve the prejudice between the two groups
He tried to just put the two groups together for a picnic but that didn’t work and resulted in the groups just throwing food at each other. Sherif found that a super ordinate goal was needed
What are the three stages of sherif study
Stage 1- the 2 groups were formed and set up norms and hierarchies
Stage 2- the two groups were introduced and competition were set up in the form of a tournament ( touch football, tug of war) which resulted in name calling and physical fights
Stage 3- the two groups were set goals that needed each other to achieve such as fixing a broken water tank, chipping in for the cinema and pulling the food truck out of the mud
Three terms defined according to sherif:
Small group
Norms
Group
Small group- individuals share a common goal that fosters interaction; individuals are affected different by being in a group; an in group develops with own hierarchy and set of norms
Norms- prod of group interaction and reg of behaviour
