Sheldon Flashcards
What are strengths of theory
Supporting research
Quantity of supporting research and quality
Practical applications
What are weaknesses of theory
Somatotypes are not fixed and can change
Cannot explain all criminals
Fails to provide a definitive cause
What is supporting research
Glueck and Glueck found correlation between mesomorphy and criminality. 60.1% of delinquents gruu in o were meomorphic compared to 30.7% the non delinquents
Why is quantify and quality of supporting research strength
Included a non criminal and criminal groups which meant he compared the groups and sample was large being representive
Why is practical applications a strength
Identify crime by looking for somatoypes and allow us to target those at most risk
Why is somatoyoes not being fixed a weakness
Somatotyoes change throughout lifetime due to lifestyle and can be the case with prison food and excerize in prison
Why is theory not linking to all crime a weakness
N got all criminals are mesomorphs like John Wayne Gacy was endomorphic
Why does Sheldon’s theory failing to give definitive cause a weakness
Only establish correlation between mosomorphy and crime. States it is due to biological factors but others disagree. I teractionist believe it is life experiences that push mesomorphs to crime since looking aggressive can result in negative label
what is this theory??
physiological
explain Sheldon’s theory??
-Believed criminal behaviour was linked to a person’s physical form but was focused on the somatotype
-found 3 somatotypes =
ectomorph, endomorph and mesomorph
what is the body types and personality of ectomorphs??
- body features = thin and fragile, flat-chested, lean, small
-personality = self-conscious, thoughtful, private people, emotionally restrainable
what is the body features and the personality of mesomorphs??
- body features =muscular, athletic, hourglass, rectangular, thick skin and easy muscle gain
- personality = courageous, adventurous and aggressive
what is the body features and personality of endomorphs??
- body features = soft, fat, underdeveloped muscles, round physique and difficulty loosing weight
- personality = sociable, relaxed, self-indulgent
what is the supporting research of the theory??
assessed the somatotypes of 200 college students (non-criminal) and 200 delinquents (some criminal). He analysed photos of the participants and rates their level of mesomorphy, ectomorphy and endomorphy on a scale of 7. He then worked out the average rating for each group and compared their samples
what are the results of the supporting research?
Overall, delinquents and criminal delinquents had higher mean of mesomorphy rating than the college students. these findings support sheldon’s hypothesis that mesomorphic people are more prone to criminality
