Describes a description of Sheila Birling
“A pretty girl in her early twenties, very pleased with life and rather
excited”
Shows her age and how immature she is especially when talking to her parents
“Yes, go on, Mummy”
Shows she some what cares for the girl who died since she can’t stop thinking about it on her special day
“(rather distressed) I can’t help thinking about this girl- destroying
herself so horribly- and I’ve been so happy tonight. Oh I wish you
hadn’t told me.”
Identifies the girls aren’t cheap labour there humans. She can relate to it since shes a girl
“But these girls aren’t cheap labour- they’re people.”
“She was a very pretty girl…that didn’t make it any better.”
Shows how jealous Sheila can get then can abuse her power
“I went to the manager and told him this girl had been very
impertinent – and – and - ”
Claims she would help now even though shes dead. A bit convenient
“And if I could help her now, I would-”
Claims she wont do it ever again to anybody because she feels so guilty
“I’ll never, never do it again to anybody…I feel now I can never go
there again”
Sheila realising how much the Inspector knows that no one else knows. Shes the only Birling that realises that
“Why- you fool- he knows. Of course he knows. And I hate to think
how much he knows that we don’t know yet. You’ll see. You’ll see.”
Sheila explaining to family that if you don’t say the truth the inspector will find out anyway and make it worse
“You mustn’t try to build up a kind of wall between us and that girl. If
you do the Inspector will just break it down. And it’ll be all the worse
when he does”
Joking about a rope to show how guilty they all are
“No, he’s giving us the rope- so that we’ll hang ourselves”
Joking around about the fact no in her family has learnt there lesson
Bitterly ”I suppose we’re all nice people now”
Explaining that they got inspected alright
“He inspected us all right.”
She doesn’t like the way her father talks about the dead girl
“It frightens me the way you talk”
