Sheet metal processes Flashcards
Typical Sheet metal parts
Car Bodies, aircraft fuselages, trailers, office furniture
Sheet metal processes
- Shearing
- Punch & Die Shearing
- Blanking &Punching
- Perforating
- Cut off (Parting)
- Notching
- lancing
- Slitting
Punching/Blanking
Punching:
seperates a slug from the workpiece
Blanking:
seperates the workpiece from the rest material (similar to punching)
Perforating
Punching process which apllicates bunch of holes in the workpiece
Notching
removes pieces or shapes from the edges
lancing
process that leaves a tab without removing material
Slitting
shearing operation using pair of circular blades (opening a can)
Compound dies
several operations in one stroke at one station
progressive dies
Sheet metal is fed through a coil
more than one stroke, different operations at different stations following each other; strip stays on machine
Bending
- V and Edge Bending
- always a little more bending because of Springback
Roll Forming
forms continious length of sheets by passing it through a set of rolls
Drawing & Deep drawing
round sheet metal plate is placed over a hollow die and then punshed into final shape (cup)
- deep drawing just more depth
Progressive die Drawing
same as Progressice dies just with integrated drawing process
Inproper Clearance
Too small:
- high forces needed, inproper (too soon), double burnishing
Too big:
- excessive burrs, tapered cut edge
Sheared Edge Terminology
- Rollover
- Burnish
- Fractured Zone
- Burr (cut hand etc.)
