Apocalypse
A type of scared literature characterized by symbolic literature symbolic imagery pointing to the expectation that the powers or evil will be destroyed and the righteous raised to a new life in justice.
Analogy of Faith
Because God is the truth, there is an absolute unity and coherence of truths contained in the various books of the bible.
Bible
Sacred scripture. The books which contain the truths of Gods revelation and were composed by human authors inspired by the spirit.
Canon
Greek and Latin for rule. A statue promulgated to assist in the practice of governing the Church fairly and consistently.
Deuterocanonical
Those parts of the Old Testament that were removed from Jewish or Hebrew canon of scripture.
Deuteronomistic
One of the supposed original sources of the Pentateuch, particularly the book of Deuteronomy, written around the seventeenth century.
Elohist
One of the supposed original sources of the Pentateuch, reflecting the perspective of Jews in the northern kingdom of Israel around the eighth or ninth century A.D.
Epistle
A letter addressed to a particular person or people. Much of the New Testament consists of epistles written to individuals, to congregations, or to the Church as a whole.
Evangelist
One who proclaims the euangellion. ( Good News)
Figure
An event or person in scripture that points toward a later event or person. The type, on the other hand, has similarities virtues or other qualities as its fulfillment.
Genealogy
The study of ancestry, or a chronological list of ancestors. Genealogies of Jesus are part of the Gospels of St. Matthews and St. Luke as evidence that Jesus is in the ancestral line of Abraham, Isacc, Jacob, and David, fulfilling the Old Testament prophecies about the Messiah.
Gospel
An old English rendering of the Greek for good news. The good news of God’s mercy and love revealed in the life, Death, and the Resurrection of Christ.
Hexapla
An edition of the Old Testament produced by the origen.
Liturgy of the Eucharist
The portion of the Mass that includes the preparation of the bread and wine, the consecration of the Body and Blood of Christ.
Liturgy of the Word
The portion of the Mass that includes the reading of Scripture and the homily.
