Sharma et al 2010 Flashcards
What are cognition, learning, and memory?
Cognition = broad processes that include memory, language, attention, problem-solving, and association
Memory = Behavioral change caused by an experience
Learning = Process to acquire memory
What is memory divided into and further subdivided into?
Declarative (explicit) and non-declarative (implicit) memories
Declarative -> Episodic and semantic
non-declarative -> motor skills and habits
What are the brain regions involved in declarative vs non-declarative memories?
Declarative = HPC and MTL structures like EC
non-declarative = striatum, cerebellum
What kind of memory is the amygdala involved in?
Emotional memory
Which type of memory is especially vulnerable to aging?
Episodic memory, determined by spatiotemporal context
What is the spatial memory a subtype of?
Episodic memory because it stores information in the spatial and temporal frame
What 2 large pieces of evidence indicate hippocampal involvement in episodic memory?
Patient HM removal of MTL having difficulty with acquiring memories
Place cells that fire depending on animal’s location
What do patients with MTL damage exhibit?
Severe episodic memory impairment but intact semantic or procedural/habit learning.
Which brain region is an early target to aging related changes?
Hippocampus
Do aging humans exhibit spatial memory deficits?
Yes, they show difficulty in navigating through large environments and remembering relational info with respect to landmarks
Which type of spatial memory is more resistant to interference?
Reference more than working memory
