6
Q

how does shared medium approach work?

A

instead of every computer having a cable to every other computer they only have 1 cable connected to a shared medium

8
Q

how is shared medium more simpler?

A

for any new computer we just add a new connection to the shared medium

10
Q

what are the disadvantages?

A

only one computer can talk at any time and if all transmit at same time then data can collide and become corrupted

11
Q

how do we avoid collisions?

A

use access control and make it so only control can send and rest listen

12
Q

what is access control?

A

control who can send on the medium and how long they can send for

13
Q

why do we control the length they can send for?

A

if not one device could monpolise the whole resource

14
Q

how do we avoid a computer monopolising

A

break the communication into packets then allow each computer to send a packet in turn

15
Q

so what is packet switching?

A

split data into small packets
each packet is sent individually across shared medium
if message bigger than packet break it into smaller packets
reassemble at the other end
need destination address
need a packet header

16
Q

What do we need to know abt packets?

A

how big they are
size in packet header
can have start and end packet markers

17
Q

What does packet switching solve in a shared medium?

A

access control and addressing (which device is recipient of the data)

18
Q

is the transmission medium reliable?

A

no theyre not errors are still expected

19
Q

what happens if an error is detected in a packet?

A

we only need to retransmit that packet not the whole message
