Shapes of molecules !!!!!!! Flashcards
VSEPR stands for(for fun lol)
Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion
Which are the two types of electron pairs? Define.
Bonding pair - a pair that is involved in a covalent bond.
Lone pair - a pair that is not involved in bonding.
Electron pairs repelling strength. Strongest to weakest.
- Lone pair - Lone pair
- Bonding pair - Lone pair
- Bonding pair - Bonding pair
Bond angles in different shapes.
This app asks money for pictures so before doing that make sure you remember all the shapes or at least most common ones please pretty please
2•
Linear - 180°
Bent - 118° or 104.5° if two lone pairs are present.
3•
Trigonal planer - 120°
4•
Square planer - 90°
Tetrahedral - 109.5°
Trigonal pyramidal - 107°
5•
Trigonal bipyramidal - 90° and 120°
Trigonal pyramidal or see-saw - 89° and 119°
Trigonal planer or T-shape - 120° or 89°
6•
Octahedral - 90°
Square pyramidal - 89°
Lastly —> get yourself a plan ready when you’ll need to predict a shape.
- Draw dot and cross diagram of a molecule and count all electron pairs.
- See if there are any lone pairs, if there are adjust the shape accordingly.
- Name it and state the bond angle.
