Shapes of Distributions Flashcards
When are mean, median and mode identical?
In a normal distribution
What is skewness?
It is the extent of how lopsided the frequency curve is rather than symmetrical.
What is a positive skew?
There are more scores on the right of the mode than the left.
The mean and median are bigger than the mode.
What is a negative skew?
There are more scores on the left of the mode than the right.
The mean and median are smaller than the mode.
What is kurtosis?
This is how flat or steep the frequency curve is
What are the major features of a distribution?
Central tendency
Variation
Skewness
Kurtosis
What are the 3 types of Kurtosis curves?
Leptokurtic - a steep curve
Mesokurtic - a normal curve
Platykurtic - a flat curve (like plateau)
What is Bimodal distribution?
It is a continuous probability distribution with two different modes/peaks
What is cumulative percent or percentile?
It is where the score will fall within the frequency, relative to all the other scores in the distribution.
Low percentile - low end of distribution
High percentile - high end
Doesn’t matter what shape the distribution is
What does a normal distribution looked like?
It is bell-shaped
