This happens when the Moon comes between the Sun and the Earth, so that the Earth (in the shadow) darkens during the day. At the time of total eclipse, only the flames of the outer edge of the Sun can be seen

This happens when the Moon moves into the Earth’s shadow. When the Moon is in the Earth’s Umbra, no sunlight can reach the moon and it is seen to go dark
