Shade Assessment and Laboratory Communication Flashcards
Features of prescribing an aesthetic restoration?
Shape
Colour
Surface texture
Translucency
What is communicating shape? When is it used?
Copy adjacent teeth Requires: Study cast Photo Diagnostic wax up (if not sound teeth)
Used when crowing 2+ anterior teeth
Positives of an occlusal wax up?
Gives pt an idea of what to expect after treatment Shape and aesthetics Tooth reduction Occlusal contacts OVD
How to communicate colour?
Subjective shade assessment - colour determined by: the illuminant, the object and observer
Objective shade assessment - colourimeter, image analysis
Complications of subjective shade assessment?
Lighting conditions Distracting strong colours Colour variation within individual tooth Translucency variation Surface reflection Individual colour perception
How to describe colour?
Munsell system - plot colour within a colour space
Hue - the colour family
Chroma - the colour saturation
Value - lightness
What are they undertones of shades A, B, C, D?
A - yellow/reddish
B - yellowish
C - greyish
D - yellowish, greyish, reddish
What is the problem with the classic shade guide?
Shades do not cover entire colour space
Not evenly distributed
What is the 3D shade guide?
Used for ceramics
Shades have equal distribution and logical construction
As move down shade guide = increase in chroma
Move along L and R = hue shift
Move along = value
Allows you to determine value of the pts tooth and the hue
How to communicate surface texture?
Photos
Study cast
How to communicate translucency?
One pic in ICP
One in space (something dark behind teeth)
Shade taking tips?
Hydrated teeth Switch off operating light Multiple light sources - daylight Multiple opinions Work quickly - look at something blue between observations
What to send to the lab?
Pre op imp Working imp Opposing imp Interocclusal record Lab card Shade, shape translucency, surface texture
