Shade Assessment and Lab Communication Flashcards
What factors to consider in aesthetic restoration?
Shape
Colour
Translucency
Surface texture
How can shape be communicated?
Can be simple if there is adjacent teeth
- Use study cast - copy what was there
- Photos
- Diagnostic wax-up - esp if crowning +1 anterior teeth
What can diagnostic wax-up show?
Shape and aesthetic
Tooth reduction
Occlusal contact
OVD
2 ways of communicating colour?
- Subjective shade assessment
2. Objective shade assessment
What is subjective shade assessment?
Colour perceived by
- Illuminant: lighting condition
- Object
- Observer
What is objective shade assessment?
Use digital images
Colorimeter
(see RVC for specific names)
How is colour described?
Munsell system
- Hue = colour family (colour of tea)
- Chroma = saturation/ intensity (how long brewed)
- Value = lightness of colour (milk added)
What is limitations of classic shade guide?
Shades don’t cover entire colour space (area on chart which all natural tooth colour lies in)
Not evenly distributed and can’t mix shades
How should you use shade guide to pick colour?
Find correct value
Then select chroma
Then determine hue
How to communicate surface texture?
- Photo
2. Study cast - can see surface detail
Best way to take shade of tooth?
Hydrated teeth
Switch off operating light
Multiple opinions
What to you need for laboratory communication
- Planning and pt communication
- Pre-op impression - show what there before
- Working impression -show prep
- Opposing impression - occlusal contact
- Inter-occlusal record - model mounted
- Lab card -design feature
- Shape, shade, translucency and surface texture
