Sfae Working Practices, Potential Hazards And Risk Assessments Flashcards
give 4 aspects of safe working practices
1) making sure all machinery is used in a safe manner
2) making sure all machinery, tools and equipment is in good working order
3) making sure you are aware of the safety of other when using any equipment and machinery
4) making sure you select the correct tools to use
give 10 points that are generally included in safe working practices
1) keep walkways clear to prevent any trip hazards
2) make sure PPE is worn when using machinery
3) make sure people are aware of safety procedures for example, fire exits, where fire extinguishers are kept
4) make sure machinery is working properly before use
5) make sure people have had the correct training in order to use the machinery
6) make sure all guards and safety measures are in place before using machinery

Define what is meant by the term risk assessment
A statutory process that considers what might cause harm to people in the workshops and what measures should be taken to prevent them from occurring
Define what is meant by the term hazard
Anything that can cause harm to a person
Define what is meant by the term risk
The likelihood of the hazard occurring for example, low medium or high risk
When should a risk assessment be carried out
Before manufacturing takes place in a workshop
Who conducts the risk assessment
The employer
Where should a risk assessment be kept
In establishments where there are 5 or more employees and the employer will need to regularly review it
The original risk assessment as well as any changes made to it along the way should be kept on file
Give 3 aspects that risk assessments consider and give examples of each
1) the hazard - falling over in the workshop
2) the risk level - medium
3) the control measure - keeping walkways clear
Define what is meant by the term control measure
And action that is put in place in order to prevent harm to people
Explain the layout of a basic risk assessment
Hazards are listed
Identification of the people at risk
Risk evaluation
Control measures
Review date
What is the review date on a risk assessment
The assessment should be signed and dated by the person carrying out the assessment
The review date which is usually every 6 or 12 months should also be noted down
