What is internal fertilization?
When sperm are deposited directly into female where it unites with the egg inside the female body
What is embryonic development?
When an embryo uses yolk within an egg as nourishment
What is Oviparity?
Development in an egg that is OUTSIDE of the body
What is Ovoviviparity?
Development in an egg that stays INSIDE the body
What is Viviparity?
When embryonic development takes place within the mother
What is external fertilization?
When the sperm and egg unite outside of the parent’s body
What are the 3 phases of early embryonic development?
- Cleavage 2. Gastrulation 3. Organogenesis
What happens during the Cleavage (1st) stage?
A zygote divides into separate sections
What happens during the Gastrulation (2nd) stage?
Cells begin to fold withing leading to the digestive tube being created
What does Organogenesis lead to?
Development of the neural tube which leads to creation of brain and spinal cord
