Sexual Reproduction Flashcards
What is the bladder?
A muscular sac in the pelvis that collects urine produced by the kidneys.
What is the epididymis?
A long, coiled tube that stores and matures sperm and transports it from the testes.
What is the Erectile tissue
Tissue in the body with vascular spaces that become engorged with blood. Allows the penis to become firm and erect.
What is the foreskin?
Protects the head of the penis.
What is the Penis?
- external structure
- Conveys urine from the bladder and semen from the reproductive structures to the outside.
What is the prostate gland?
- A gland surrounding the urethra just below the bladder
- Produces additional fluid that combines with sperm to form semen, and helps to increase sperm motility and longevity, supporting the sperm’s journey towards the egg
What is the seminal Vesicle?
- located behind the bladder and above the prostate gland
- Produces a sugar-rich fluid that provides energy to sperm. (70% of semen)
What is the Scrotum?
Protects and regulates the temperature of the testes in a external pouch of skin and muscle that hangs below the penis.
What is the Testicles?
- Produces sperm and the male hormone testosterone.
- enclosed within the scrotum
What is the Urethra?
Conveys urine from the bladder and semen from the reproductive structures to the outside.
What is the Vas deferens (sperm duct)?
Transports mature sperm from the epididymis to the urethra.
What is the cervix?
Allow flow of menstrual blood from the uterus and directs semen into the uterus.
What is the endometrium?
Lining of the uterus. Provides a site for implantation of an embryo. Sheds during period
What is the Fallopian tube (2x)
Transports ova/zygote from the ovary to the uterus and is the site of fertilisation.
What is the ovary (2x)
- is a gland
- Produces ova and reproductive hormones such as oestrogen and progesterone.
