When can we disclose info to someone other than the patient with the communicable disease?
If:
- Person is at risk of infection that could result in serious harm
- Patient hasn’t & can’t be convinced to tell them
What should we consider when a medical professional gets communicable disease E.g. HIV?
Their wellbeing
Their Patient’s wellbeing
Future employment
Privacy
How can we ensure the patient’s wellbeing?
Ensure the professionals disease is treated and non-communicable
Look-back exercise to screen patient’s who may have caught it
How can we help the professional with their employment?
In many cases if properly treated they can go back to work
However some provisions may have to be made that give them away to colleagues and patients, this can be a major barrier to coming forward
How can we maintain a professional’s privacy?
Ensure they are treated in a seperate clinic/hospital and that all records are confidential.
It can be difficult to keep these things hidden which can be a big barrier to seeking help
