What’s an ISVA
Independent sexual violence advisers provide specialist support to victims and survivors of sexual violence regardless of whether they have reported to police or not.
Provide impartial advice about survivors options - police, SARC, pre trial therapy, counselling and advice on other services - eg health and social care, housing, benefits.
Also complete risk assessment / safeguarding / support plan
Immediate management (within 7 days of assault) - BASHH
- Immediate safety
- Treatment of injuries
- Offer SARC referral
- Baseline CT/GC screen +/- prophylaxis
- HIV screen or serum save
- Baseline HCV/HBV screen
- HBV vaccination (0,1,3 weeks)
- EC +/- PDT
- PEPSE within 72h
- carry out self harm risk identification
- assess for any safeguarding issues or vulnerabilities
Forensic evidence - gloves
Double non sterile gloves. Change between sampling sites. No need to send gloves unless visible material on them

Psychological support - GP, local support services, psychosexual counsellor etc
- with PTSD - CBT / EMDR
- without PTSD - counselling, psychotherapy etc
Forensic sample time frame - urine
120 hours (5 days) - FFLM - but if suspect drug facilitated sexual assault - 14 days
Forensic samples for toxicology time frame - hair
6 months
Toxicology screen time frames for blood, urine and hair
Blood - up to 3 days
Urine - up to 14 days
Hair - up to 6 months
How long from sexual assault can clothes be used as forensic evidence
Until washed, no time limit
