BSRI (Bem Sex Role Inventory)
Asked 100 American undergraduates which personality traits out of 40 were desirable for men or women. Each person rates themselves on a 7-point Likert scale ranging from never to almost always true. Numerical scores for all masculine/feminine items added up. Given score for femininity, masculinity, androgyny
Gender schema theory
Bem suggested that the difference between an androgynous person and a traditionally sex-typed person is one of cognitive style. When faced with a decision on how to behave, an androgynous person responds independently of any gender concepts, whereas a traditionally sex-typed person determines what would be appropriate for their gender using gendered schemas.
