Sex & Gender Flashcards
Evaluate social learning theory
+ parents and schools have a tendency to treat boys as boys and girls as girls
- single parent families show SLT
- doesn’t take biology into account
What are the male and female sex chromosomes?
Male= XY Female= XX
Describe Bandura’s study
Aim: to see if children could become aggressive through imitation
Method: children saw an adult acting aggressively towards a bobo doll. They were then left in a room with it.
Results: children imitated the same sex model more, and boys were more aggressive than girls
Conclusion: children are more likely to imitate same sex models
Evaluate Bandura’s study
+ supports SLT
+ demonstrates the importance of gender roles
- lab conditions lack ecological validity
- no control group
What are the three stages of gender development?
Gender labelling, gender stability, gender constancy
Evaluate gender schema theory
+ explains why children above the age of 6 pay more attention to people of the same sex and seek out gender typed activities
- can’t explain a two year old’s preference for gender related things as they still believe they could grow up to be the opposite sex
Evaluate the psychodynamic theory
+ huge impact on psychology
+ more experiments have been done
- theory is somewhat untestable
- does not explain why same sex families develop the same
