Risk Factors for Ovarian Cancer
Infertility/ Nulliparity
Older age, but can be any age
Family History, genetic markers
High fat diet?
Talc in perineal area?
Mumps before menarche?
Symptoms of Ovarian Cancer
Sx. are nonspecific, vague
Increased abdominal girth
Pelvic pain, pressure
Bloating, indigestion, gas
Leg pain (on side of affected ovary)
Precautions for internal radiation (brachytherapy)
private room, isolation, door closed
lead shielding
vaginal packing in place
strict bed rest
low residue diet
assess for elevated temp, n&v
minimize time near source
lead container in room
What do you do if internal radiation material falls out?
NEVER TOUCH THE RADIATION SOURCE
use long handled tongs to place into lead container
When should a self-testicular exam be performed? Why?
During or after a shower/bath
Scrotum is relaxed
How to perform self-testicular exam
move the penis to the side
examine one testicle at a time
hold between thumb/fingers, roll it gently between the fingers
Post-op mastectomy care
SUPPORT & EDUCATION
HOB up 30 degrees when awake
support arm on a pillow (elevate)
assess drainage, tubes, dressing
assess for infection, bleeding, pt. adjustment
limb precaution of affected side
loose fitting tops, sleeves
What is tumor lysis syndrome?
A metabolic complication triggered by chemotherapy
Results from rapid destruction (necrosis) of tumor cells
A sign that treatment is working
What are the four hallmark signs of tumor lysis syndrome?
Hyperuricemia
Hyperphosphatemia
Hyperkalemia
Hypocalcemia
What are normal RBC levels?
males: 4.7-6.1
females: 4.2-5.4
When are energy conservation control measures implemented?
RBC below 4.7 in males, below 4.1 in females
What is a normal number of neutrophils?
2500-7000
When are neutropenic precautions put in place?
When neutrophils are less than 1500
