Sewing Flashcards
Tacking
Temporary stitch used
to hold fabric together
before it is sewn
permanently
Running
• A small, simple, even
stitch that runs back and
forth through the fabric,
without overlapping
• Can be worked with
embroidery thread to
decorate
• Two rows of running can
be used to gather fabric
Gathering
Used to make a wider
piece of fabric fit into a
narrower piece, e.g. a
skirt into its waistband
Back stitching
A strong, secure stitch,
used for sewing seams
where no machine is
available
Hemming
• Can be used to sew
hems, e.g. on table
cloths
Slip hemming
Used for hems on
skirts and trousers, as
it is almost invisible on
the outside
Guidelines
When threading the machine, be careful that the foot pedal cannot be accidentally pressed. This would cause the needle to injure the person threading the machine.
Thread the machine correctly, using the same thread in both the bobbin and the top spool. This will make stitches more even and help to keep the tension equal between
both threads.
Take your time - do not press the foot pedal too hard or the machine will go too fast and it will be more difficult to keep sewing straight.
Instructions:
Carefully read and follow the manufacturer's instructions for care and use, so that you do not damage the machine and can troubleshoot any problems.
Cover machine:
Cover the machine when not in use, so that dust and dirt do not get into it and cause it to break down.
Service and repair
Cover the machine when not in use, so that dust and dirt do not get into it and cause it to break down.
Service and repair
Have the machine serviced and repaired regularly by a qualified sewing machine mechanic who knows how to do the job correctly.
Seam finishes
Raw edges may be finished in one of four ways to prevent fabric fraying
Overlocking
A special overlocking machine
has a blade that trims excess
fabric.
Pinking shears
Special scissors called pinking
shears can be used to neaten
raw edges. This is a very fast
method.
Zig-zag stitch
A zig-zag stitch can be used
to neaten seam edges. It is
suitable for most fabrics.
