A positive or negative issue that affects business opportunities, people’s jobs and investment into industries

are a government-sponsored programme of new towns to be built in England, which are intended to achieve exemplary standards of sustainability
Environmental impacts
A positive or negative issue that affects ecosystems, animal habitats, water ways, pollution in the air
Favela
the term for a shanty town in Brazil
Function
The types of activities that are found in that settlement. E.g. Fishing town or port.
Migration
The movement of people to an area either permanently or temporarily
Pull factor
Attracts you want to move somewhere new e.g. better access to health care or better schooling facilities.
Push factor
Makes you want to leave somewhere e.g. due to flooding or poor soils so unable to farm.
Rural Settlement
: Location with a small population, surrounded by the countryside
Shanty town
An area of poorly built, low cost houses on land that does not have the full range of essential services such as constant access to running water.
Social impacts
A positive or negative issue that affects the livelihood/quality of people in that location.
Sustainable
Describes activities and economic growth which have a long future because people are working with the environment upon which they depend
Sustainable Development
Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs
