The countryside is symbolic of the charm and naivety of rural England. The urban world is symbolic of culture, hypocrisy, social classes and social climbing - it is easy to hide your true nature in the urban world. This is seen in the characters who live there (Miss Prism, Dr Chasuble and Cecily)

A
London is a place for business, not pleasure, and it is a lot more difficult to be who you truly are in the city. You must present yourself as a person who will get what they want, in short, a sociable, respectable gentleman
