setting Flashcards
how is setting used in a christmas carol?
pathetic fallacy is often used to reflect scrooge’s state in the play at certain times
‘It was cold, bleak, biting weather: foggy withal’ [stave 1]
pathetic fallacy:
↳ the bleak weather represents scrooge’s character in this moment as well as his nature towards other people, scrooge is cold & bleak & behaves aggressively to others
↳ the cold makes you numb, which could show how scrooge is completely numb to the feelings of others
personification: ‘biting’
↳ vicious, violent verb, reflecting scrooge’s aggression to the rest of mankind
‘fog’
↳ could symbolise scrooge’s isolation, he is isolated and unseen by the rest of humanity, and them equally being unseen to him
↳ fog could also symbolise how scrooge is blind to any view except his own and is ignorant to the issues of the poor
‘it was still very foggy and extremely cold’ [stave 2]
degree adverbs: ‘very’, ‘and extremely’
↳ combine with the pathetic fallacy to show that despite jacob marley’s visit, scrooge is still misanthropic and cold to others, as well as ignorant
↳ foreshadows how difficult it will be for scrooge to be redeemed although his change will be possible
↳ at this point scrooge still cannot determine whether the visit was real or a ‘dream’ which shows his struggle with accepting guilt for his actions
‘half thawed, half frozen’ [stave 3]
pathetic fallacy:
↳ shows how scrooge is beginning to change and gain warmth in his heart
‘running to the window…clear, bright, jovial…golden sunlight, heavenly sky’ [stave 5]
verb: ‘running’
↳ shows enthusiasm & new traits
window
↳ see through, could represent how scrooge can now see the true goodness of life
golden
↳ connotates to rarity & expensiveness
