When did settlements first appear?
Man became farmer dominating agriculture

When they took over Britain the Romans started to construct roads and bigger cities grew.
When they fled away the cities started being small again
Three types of settlement patterns
Nucleated. Joined up hoses closely. Usually in crossroads.
Linear. In a ‘straight’ line. Along rivers or roads.
Dispersed. No obvious pattern. In the field land
What is a settlement hierarchy?
A settlement hierarchy is the order of how big settlements are

Isolated dwelling 1 - 10 people Hamlet 11 - 100 people Village 101 - 2,000 people Town 2,001 - 100,000people City 100,001 - 1,000,000 people Conurbation more than 1,000,000
What services does an isolated dwelling have?

What services does a hamlet have?
Unlikely there are services
What services does a village have?
It is likely to have a post office, newsagent, general store and maybe a library.
What services does a capital city or conurbation have.
All of them including department stores, universities and cinema
