Sets Flashcards
1
Q
Set
A
a group of values that have some common property
2
Q
Elements/Members
A
items included in a set
3
Q
Finite Set
A
a set in which all of its constituents can be counted (e.g. the number of species of birds in America)
4
Q
Infinite Set
A
a set in which its constituents can be counted indefinitely (e.g. all positive numbers that are evenly divisible by 3)
5
Q
Empty Set
A
a set with no elements
6
Q
Nonempty Set
A
a set with any numbers
7
Q
Subset
A
if the elements of set A are all included in the elements of set B, A is a subset of B
8
Q
Other Characteristics of Sets
A
- Elements are unique (not repeated)
- Order of the elements is not important
9
Q
Characteristics of a List
A
- similar to a finite set, except that the order of the elements matter
- duplicate members can be included
10
Q
Set Operations
A
- Intersection: consists of all the elements that are contained in both sets
- Union: the set of all the elements that are elements of either or both sets
- Mutually Exclusive: if 2 sets have no common elements
- Inclusion-exclusion Principle: ???
