Sets Flashcards
Define the union of two sets. How is it represented?
Union means the set of all elements that are in set A or B or both. It is represented as A U B.
Define set.
A collection of numbers or other objects. The objects are called the elements of the set.
The order in which the elements are listed does not matter, so long as they are the same. For example, if all the elements of set S are also elements of a larger set T, then S is a subset of T.
Define intersection of sets. How is it represented?
Intersection is the set of all elements that are in both sets A and B. It is represented as A^B.
How do you call sets that have no elements in common?
Disjoint or mutually exclusive.
What is a Venn diagram and how is it used?
A Venn diagram illustrates the relationship between sets and it is represented by regions in a plane.
For example, for two sets S and T that are not disjoint and neither of which is the subset of the other, the intersection is represented by the shaded region in the diagram.
