SETS Flashcards
what is the element of the set?
each component of a set is the element or member of the set
what is a set?
a well defined (clearly described) collection of objects
Cardinality of set
number of elements in a set [denoted by n(_)]
Roster Method
listing all its elements [Y- A,B,C,D]
Builder Notation
describing the elements using mathematical statements
Finite set
a set that has a fixed number of elements and are countable can be written in roster form
Infinite set
opposite of finite set [aka infinite or endless]
Empty/Null Set
is a perfectly good collection of distinct element it is the collection of no element. Is represented by a crossed out O and by { }
[e.g- a dog with five legs]
Subset
a set whose element are elements of another set
Proper Subset
is a set that is not equal to the given set
Equal Sets
two sets with the same element
Equivalent Sets
two sets with the same number of elements
Universal set
the totality of all the elements in two or more given sets it is usually donated by “U”
Union of Sets
refers to a collection of all elements present in all the sets
[Total of all elements in the said sets] denoted by “U”
Intersection of the two sets
contains only those elements that are found in both sets
