Q
‘Hey, who you calling average ?’
A
- page 10- act 1
- throughout this line, Sephy would use a playful tone created by a pause between the words ‘Hey’ and ‘who’- as her character motivation, is to tease Callum.
- to develop her character motivation, Sephy would then use inflection on the words ‘who you calling average’
- ; to emphasise that she is speaking to Callum in a playful tone, her use of inflection would be created by an increase in volume after the word ‘Hey’, as she then has a moderately fast tempo throughout her line because, at this point in the play, Sephy is buzzing with excitement that she is with Callum.
- to further highlight her excitement, Sephy would reflect this through her character motivation: to tease Callum. Therefore, she would then use exaggeration after the word ‘Hey’ because, she wants to tease Callum.
- furthermore, Sephy would then utilise her physical acting skills, to hone her character motivation to the audience. This is because, she would have a firm body language as she says the word ‘Hey’

- furthermore, Sephy would then utilise physical acting skills to hone her character motivation to the audience.
This is because, her character motivation would be to discourage Callum from calling her ‘average’ and not ‘exceptional- which would create a tense atmosphere, perhaps causing the audience to have symphathy for Sephy.
- this would be furthered by her use of close body language as she tilts her head down by over ninety- degrees, with a slouched posture [created by her slumping her shoulders, and arching her back]
- ; as Sephy is only toying with Callum, as her character motivation throughout this line is to tease him, she would then change to have a confident body language by having a fierce stance as she says ‘who you calling average?’.
Although this is meant to be playful on a deeper level, it could perhaps reflect how crosses see noughts as inferior to them, because Sephy would be looking down at Callum, as she says these words.
- though perhaps also a parallel to act 2, when a Sephy mockingly says: I guess that’s the value system us Crosses have set out, so in a way, you’re playing by our rules, when you’re breaking them all’
- to then reinforce Sephy’s character motivation, she would contuine to use physical acting skills by a use of direct eye contact, as she says ‘who you calling average ?’.
- This would be created by Sephy first withdrawing eye contact on the word ‘Hey’; she would then have a confident eye contact as she stares down at Callum.
- This is because, it could be perhaps reflective of how even at this moment in the play where she is toying with Callum, she still believes she has control of the situation- although Callum is in power of the situation, as he previously says: ‘… should they, Sephy ?’
