Set Notation Symbols Flashcards
Capitol U
The universal set (everything in the set)
∪
Union (everything in both circles)
Small n
Intersection (things/numbers inbetween the two circles)
Capitol N
Naturals (numbers over 0 (positive) )
Z with a line imbetween it
Integers ( any numbers positive or negative )
Capitol Q
Rationals ( something that can be a fraction e.g. 6/1 )
E that kind of looks like a backwards B
Is an element of
⊂
The symbol “⊂” means “is a proper subset of”. Example. Since all of the members of set A are members of set D, A is a subset of D.
c crossed out
Not a subset of
What is a subset
A set within a set
E.g.
a= 123
d= 1234
A is a subset of d because all the numbers in a are in d
What is an element
Number(s) that belong in a set
E crossed out
Is not an element of
Curly brackets {} are used for
Listing elements in a set/subset
#
The cardinal number ( the amount of elements in a set )
E.g. W#=7
O with a cross through it
The null set ( no elements )
