Abstract
Not realistic or life-like, using colours, shapes, textures, sounds and other means to achieve and effect.
Apron
The area of the stage nearest the audience, which projects in front of the curtain
Backdrop
A large painted cloth hung as part of the scenery
Box set
A set which has 3 complete walls, often used in naturalistic set design
Drapes
Curtains or other hanging fabrics
Flat
A piece of scenery mounted on a frame
Fly
Rainy and lowering scenery onto the stage using a series of ropes and pulleys
Ground Plan
Bird’s eye view of the set showing the scale of the set.
Naturalistic
Life-like, realistic
Props
Small items that actors carry onstage
Revolve
A large turntable device that can be turned to reveal a different setting
Set Dressing
Items on the set that are not used as props, but create detail and interest. E.g. frames, paintings.
Sight lines
The line where the audience can and can’t see
Trucks
A platform on wheels upon which scenery can be mounted and moved
