What is an author’s point of view?
The perspective from which the story is told; the author’s attitude about what is being told.
What are some types of point of view?
First person (I...my...we...) Third person (He... she... they...)
What are some other ways we might describe an author’s point of view?
Cautious, supportive, curious, grateful, angry, etc.
What is an argument or claim?
A point that an author is trying to make, and wants you to be persuaded to believe
What is an author’s purpose?
The reason for writing the text.
What are some examples of authors’ purposes?
inform, persuade, entertain, explain, describe
How does the author’s word choice determine the tone or mood of the text?
The words an author uses give us a definite “feel” for the text–word choice can be silly or serious, technical or relaxed, slang or formal, etc.
