The mosque was built by some of the hypocrites in Medina, who were Muslims in name only. They were actually enemies of Islam and were trying to sow discord among the Muslims. The mosque was built in such a way that it could be used as a base for their activities.
When Prophet Muhammad returned from the Battle of Tabuk, he was informed about the mosque. He then ordered its demolition. The Quran also mentions this event in the following verses:
“And those who have set up a mosque to cause harm and out of disbelief and to split the Muslims into groups, and as an ambush for him who has fought against Allah and His Messenger before. And they will swear, “We only wanted the best.” But Allah testifies that indeed they are liars. Do not pray in it ever. A mosque founded on piety from the first day is better than it. In it are men who love to be purified, and Allah loves those who purify themselves.” (Quran 9:107-108)
The demolition of the mosque of Dirar was a clear sign that Prophet Muhammad was not tolerant of hypocrisy or of those who tried to undermine Islam. It also showed that he was willing to take action against those who threatened the unity of the Muslim community.
According to historical accounts, the hypocrites built the Mosque of Dirar with the intention of causing division and discord among the Muslims. They wanted to create a separate place of worship to draw the believers away from the main mosque in Medina, which was the Prophet’s Mosque (Masjid an-Nabawi).
When the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) learned about the true intentions behind the construction of the Mosque of Dirar, he ordered for it to be demolished. The mosque was razed to the ground, and it serves as an example of the Prophet’s proactive measures to protect the unity and harmony of the Muslim community.
The incident is mentioned in the Quran in Surah At-Tawbah (Chapter 9, Verse 107-110), where Allah instructs the believers not to pray in that mosque and commends the Prophet’s decision to destroy it.
So, the Mosque of Dirar was demolished by the command of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) due to its harmful intentions and potential to disrupt the Muslim community.
