What is a direct pathway?
Media promotes change by informing, modeling, motivating and guiding personal changes
What is a socially mediated pathway?
Media links participants to social networks and community settings which provide personalized guidance, natural incentives and social support
What’s important about socially mediated approaches?
- People do not work alone, but in groups
* Efficacy is at its highest when people work in groups or gain social support through other networks
Name some innovative methods of promoting behavior changes
- Serial television dramas around the world founded on social cognitive theory (like in Tanzania)
- Video games helping to increase children’s self-efficacy and help in management of chronic diseases (asthma, diabetes, cystic fibrosis)
What is Bandura’s definition for self-efficacy?
“An individual’s belief in his or her capacity to execute behaviors necessary to produce specific performance attainments” (to believe you can do it)
Define efficacy
The ability or power to produce an effect (to actually be able to do it)
Define collective efficacy
“A group’s shared belief in it’s conjoint capabilities to organize and execute courses of action required to produce given levels of attainment.”
