What is substance misuse?
Intake of harmful pyschoactive substances e.g drugs which can lead to dependacy syndrome.
Types of substances
Stimulants- increase awareness+ confident, tobacco, cocaine
Hallucinogens- Alter your perception of reality- LSD, acid, magic mushrooms
Depressant- Make you more relaxed- Alcohols, Cannabis
Physical dependance
Experience symptoms associated with withdrawal
Psychological dependance
Having impaired control
Theories of dependance
Learning theory:
classic conditioning model- drug dependancy- environmental paired with the drug effects.Association between positive and negative
Imitation theories:Learn through observation and listening to others
Modelling- Developing drug use because you see others participating around you
Expectation- Positive drug, drugs use more likely
Self-efficacy- How you view your ability to deal with situation affects behaviour
Rational choice theories:
- Dependancy involves making rational choices that favours the benefits of dependance over costs
Describe common treatment regimes for addiction+ withdrawal
Psychosogical withdrawal- applies to all substances
Physical withdrawal- Generally CNS antidepressants
Different treatment model
Medical model:
Focus on individuals condition: tolerance, withdrawal symptoms
Detoxification regime, substitute prescribing
Disease model:
Addiction is an illness
Genetic/ so predetermined
Avoidance is the only viable treatment
Behavioural model:
- Addiction doesn’t exists
-Excessive use is coping mechanism
- Alternate coping mechanisms can be taught and past experiences addressed
Treatments?
Harm reduction- Safety advice, overdose awareness, injecting advice Psychosocial interventions: - motivational interviewing - Mindfulness -relapse prevention
