What are the functions of the oculomotor nerve (CN III)?
Motor - most extra-ocular muscles, levator palpebrae superioris
Parasympathetic - ciliary muscles, sphincter pupillae
What is the function of the trochlear nerve (CN IV)?
Motor - superior oblique muscle
What are the functions of the trigeminal nerve (CN V)?
General sensory - sensation over face and facial structures
Motor - muscles of mastication
What is the function of the abducens nerve (CN VI)?
Motor - lateral rectus muscle
What are the functions of the facial nerve (CN VII)?
Special sensory - taste (anterior 2/3 of tongue)
Motor - muscles of facial expression
Parasympathetic - lacrimal gland and salivary glands (sublingual and submandibular)
What are the functions of the vestibulocochlear nerve (CN VIII)?
Hearing
Balance
What are the functions of the glossopharyngeal nerve (CN IX)?
Special sensory - taste (posterior 1/3 of tongue)
General sensory - posterior 1/3 of tongue, tonsils, soft palate, pharynx
Motor - stylopharyngeus
Parasympathetic - parotid gland
What are the functions of the vagus nerve (CN X) in the head and neck?
General sensory - lower pharynx and larynx
Motor - muscles of the soft palate, pharynx and larynx
What are the functions of the (spinal) accessory nerve (CN XI)?
Motor - sternocleidomastoid and trapezius
What is the function of the hypoglossal nerve (CN XII)?
Motor - tongue muscles
