Session 4: Flashcards
Intramuscular injections
1
Q
Intramuscular injections:
A
- involve injecting medications into deep muscle tissues
- muscle is less sensitive to irritating or viscous medication s
- IM injections are administered with the needle inserted at a 90-degree angle
- this route provides faster medication absorption than sub cut, because of the greater vascularity of muscle
- there is less danger of causing tissue damage when medication enter deep muscle
2
Q
Intramuscular injections:
A
- smaller volumes are recommended for elderly or fragile individuals or those with less developed muscle mass
- the sites chosen are areas where there is a minimal risk of the needle penetrating a large blood vessel, nerve or bone
