Session 3 Flashcards
What is Air Pollution?
A result of emission of hazardous substances that exceeds natural process into the atmosphere to convert, deposit and dilute
Outdoor Air Pollution
It is divided by Natural and Man made resources
What are the differences of Natural and Man Made Pollutants?
Natural pollutants have less long term adverse effects because its widely dispersed sources and infrequent events
Man Made Pollutants are emitted in local areas in high concentration
Indoor Air Pollution
Caused by open fires or simple stoves fueled by kerosene, biomass and coal
What are the impacts of Air Pollution?
4.2 million premature deaths are linked to deaths in children
4 million people die from insufficient cooking practices because of solid fuel and kerosene
What are the effect of air pollution ?
• Health Effects
○ Acute respiratory illness
○ Aggravation of pre-existing illnesses
○ Eye or nose irritation
○ Stress or loss of general well-being
• Loss of amenity
○ Odour
○ Poor visibility
○ Dust and residue deposits on surfaces
• Damage of Property
○ Acidic Pollutants
○ Deposition of Soot and Particles
• Effect on the environment
○ Death or injury to sensitive species
○ Loss of biological diversity
○ Excess nutrients loads in waterways
○ Loss of specific systems
• Economic Impact
○ Reduced property values
○ Deterrent to new industries and residents
○ Reduced crop production
○ Loss of tourism
○ Loss of productivity due to illness
What id the primary drivers of public health the prevents a huge amount of diseases?
Water and Sanitation. Not can be said to all because of the different living conditions
What are the main uses of water?
Habitats for aquatic animals
Provides diverse ecosystems
What is waterborne disease?
Contamination of human/animal faeces and urine that is transmitted througgh consumption and preparation of food
What is water-washed disease?
less water results to less washing whch results to disease or illness
What is water-based disease?
Provides an environment to live through a parasites cycle
How does polluted water or water scarcity affects lives?
2 million avoidable deaths are caused
trapping millions of people in poverty
How does polluted water or water scarcity affects livelihood?
chronic water stress posses threat to human development
What are the costs of the water crisis?
1.8 million children die per year
What are the reasons of the increase risks of sanitation systems from Climate Change?
Extreme events and gradual changes to the hydro logical cycle linked to the changes of water resources
What are Chemicals?
Any element, chemical compound, or mixture of elements and or compounds
How many chemicals are in the industry?
25 percent increase since 1970
est. 84000 are registered and 25000 are used in commerce
96 percent of products are added with chemicals
What is a Hazardous Chemical?
Any chemical that can be physical hazards or health hazards
Health Hazards?
A chemical that causes acute or chronic health affect of the people exposed
What are some facts about work related chemical illness and injury ?
A large amount of people die from asbestos caused cancer millions are related to occupational deaths
What is the purpose of WHMIS?
It provides health and safety information on hazardous products for use, handling, or storage
What are the main components of WHMIS?
Hint: 4
Hazard identification
labeling
safety data sheets
worker education and training
What are the Obligation of Suppliers?
Appropriate classification
must have label on the product
Must provide SDS to the receiver
What are the content of Safety Data Sheets?
Summary about the product
Provides advice about safety precautions
What are the section numbers? ○ Identification ○ Hazards: ○ Hazard Identification ○ Exposure Controls ○ Safe Handling and storage: ○ What to do in an emergency:
○ Identification: Section 1 ○ Hazards: Section 2 ○ Hazard Identification: 9-12 ○ Exposure Controls: Section 8 ○ Safe Handling and storage: Section 7 ○ What to do in an emergency: Section 4-6
