What is conformity
A type of social influence where we choose to go along with majority
What did Kelman suggest
That there are 3 types of conformity
What 3 types of conformity did Kelman suggest
- identification : individuals conform to expect of social roles
- internalisation : a person publicly changing opinion to match group, whilst agreeing privately
- compliance : going with majority in spite of not agreeing
What is informational social influence
Where people conform because they’re uncertain of what to do so they look to others for guidance
What was the jelly bean conformity experiment
- Asked individuals to guess how many jellybeans were in a jar
- Grouped the people then asked them to estimate again
- Interviewed individually again and majority of answers changed
Reasons for conformity
- distortion of perception due to stress of group pressure
- distortion of judgment
- distortion of action
What is distortion of perception due to stress of group pressure
Subjects agreeing wholeheartedly with group even though the answers obviously wrong
What is distortion of judgment
Assuming their answer is incorrect so they conform with group

individual knew they were right but when asked changed their answer as to not be seen as different
