Session 2 Flashcards
1
Q
Why are observed quantities and true values different?
A
Due to random variation
2
Q
How to use hypothesis testing?
A
Hypothesis testing calculates probability of getting an observation as extreme as the one observed, assuming hypothesis is true.
If probability is small, observation and stated hypothesis is incompatible, reasonable to reject hypothesis, statistically significant.
If probability is big, observed findings would be consistent with null hypothesis being true
3
Q
How to use 95% confidence interval?
A
Range where we can be 95% certain that the true value of the underlying tendency really lies
If wide = greater variation in population values, small sample size
