Session 2 Flashcards
Key allergy words and definitions LO
Allergen, sensitivity, hyposensitivity, sensitisation, anaphylaxis
Food allergy:
Allergen - substance -> production of IgE
hyposensitivity -> abnormal response
sensitisation -> production of IgE antibodies
allergy-> IgE mediated (peanut) non IgE mediated (milk)
atopy -> genetic inclination to produce IgE to allergens
anaphylaxis -> allergic response, rapid, death
A immunologically mediated adverse reaction to foods

How does hay fever, conjunctivitis, asthma, eczema, urticaria, hives, angiooedema present

- What do we mean by allergic march
- Why is allergy important
Not LO
- change in incidence of allergies with change in age
e. g. Asthma and food dec with age
conjunctivitis increases with age

What is food allergy?
food allergy -> adverse affect on health by a specific immune response on exposure to food (IgE or Non-IgE mediated)
food intolerance -> numberous adverse effects to food not due to the immune response
How do we classify food allergies?

How does food allergy present?

The presenting symptoms of IgE and non-IgE mediated classically affect the systems listed above with stereotypical symptoms. These are:
1. IgE mediated food allergic symptoms:

Non-IgE food allergy symptoms

The presenting symptoms of IgE and non-IgE mediated classically affect the systems listed above with stereotypical symptoms. These are:
1. IgE mediated food allergic symptoms:

- Non-IgE mediated or delayed-onset (common food triggers)

What do we mean by cross reactivity of food allergens
Food family of the allergen needs to be checked
40% likely to be allergic to the family of food associated with the allergen

• Allergy history taking LO
What should you ask?

• Relevant allergy investigations LO
physical - height & weight
screening tests -> IgE sensitisation -> SPTs (skin prick test - prick with IgE) -> 15 mins
prick prick (food to skin)
Diagnosis verification -> ORAL FOOD CHALLENGE
• Food allergy management?

Define food intolerance and food allergy
Differentiate between IgE mediated and Non - IgE mediated
