Session 1: Other layer 2 protocols Flashcards
Why may WiFi be an undesirable layer 2 protocol for some situations?
Firstly, WiFi is a power hungry protocol which makes it an ill fit for devices running on battery and/or with very limited computational power.
It may also be unnecessary where its raw speed is not required.
What are the ZigBee and Bluetooth protocols used for and how do they different from WiFi?
ZigBee and Bluetooth are frequently utilized in applications where power consumption is of special concern. Some examples are headphones, smartwatches and industrial control systems. Both have significantly lower transmission speeds, but are far less resource intensive. Both are similar to WiFi operating in the 2.4 GHz spectrum with a range no greater than 100 meters.
