Session 1: Introduction to Qualitative Research Flashcards
WHAT IS ONTOLOGY?
It is the study of what we can know about reality and what reality (potentially) is.
What are the two main ontological beliefs?
Realism and relativism.
What is realism?
Realism claims that there’s one truth that is separate from the individual and is to be discovered.
What are the implications of realism?
This means that reality can be objectively measured measured and generalised to other situations.
What is relativism?
Relativism claims there are multiple truths that are discovered through subjective experience and assigned meaning.
What are the implications or relativism?
This means that reality can’t be generalised unless the experiences are contextually and relationally similar.
WHAT IS EPISTEMOLOGY?
