What are the main categories of child abuse?
Physical (could also be fabricating or inducing illness)
Sexual (could also be child sexual exploitation and is still abuse even if appears consensual)
Emotional (may involve seeing ro hearing I’ll treatment of another)
Neglect (not may child’s physical, psychological needs - can be during pregnancy due ro maternal substance abuse)
What are the common features in the history which may indicated a safeguarding issue?

What are some of the common signs of examination which may indicate a child safeguarding issue?
Unexplained changes in behaviour or personality Become withdrawn Seem anxious Being uncharacteristically aggressive Lack social skills and have few friends Poor bond or relationship with parent Knowledge of adult issued inappropriate for their age Running away or going missing Wear clothes to cover their body
What are the common risk factors which increase the likelihood of types of child abuse?
Substance misuse Mental health disorders Parent experienced abuse Busy job Multiple partners Child has a condition During pregnancy Fostered/adopted Once abused - will more likely happen again
What are the potential consequences of failures to detect and act on child safeguarding concerns?
Health Pain Child’s worried/anxiety Lack of development or social skills PTSD Not good relationship with parent Feeling of inadequacy Higher risk of being abused later in life and abuse their own children More likely to involve themselves in drug and alcohol abuse and violence
What is the definition of ACEs?
Traumatic events that occur before a child reaches the age of 18, eg: domestic violence
parental abandonment through separation or divorce
a parent with a mental health condition
being the victim of abuse (physical, sexual and/or emotional)
being the victim of neglect (physical and emotional)
a member of the household being in prison
growing up in a household in which there are adults experiencing alcohol and drug use problems.
What would you do if you thought a child was being abused?
Reviews - reflect on own biases, using chronologies
Do not stop a young person who is freely recalling events
Remain calm and not appear shocked
Don’t promise to not tell anyone else or everything will be ok
Record timing, setting, people present and what was said and quote.
Inform and discuss wiyj line manager or supervisor
May be referral to social care
What is abuse and neglect?
Forms of maltreatment of a child. By inflicting harm or failing to act to prevent harm. May be by family or in an institution or community setting, by those known or by others (eg: internet). They may be abused by an adults or adults or another child or children
How would you notice neglect in primary care?

What is a red flag when explaining injuries?
Look as though they have self harmed
Why should you review child deaths?
Establish cause
Any potential contributory and modifiable factors
Ongoing support for family
Learn lessons to reduce risk of future child deaths
Why have many cases of abuse not been picked up by professionals?
Lack of communication between different sectors
Small things - create a picture
