Serology - assessing exposure Flashcards
1
Q
How do we measure malaria transmission intensity?
A
EIR, parasite prevalence and incidence
2
Q
What factors are incorporated in EIR calculation?
A
daily biting rate X number of days in year/season X sporozoite rate
3
Q
How is parasite prevalence determined?
A
Microscopy, rapid diagnostic tests, molecular tests (PCR)
4
Q
What tests can be used to detect antibodies?
A
Complement fixation, Haemaglutination immuno fluorescence ELISA Protein microarray Luminex Rapid diagnostic test (RDT)
5
Q
What are the advantages of using antibody as a marker for exposure?
A
Sensitive at low transmission levels.
Less affected by seasonality, as it lasts longer in the system than parasites.
High throughput, cheap and simple.
