Series Circuits Flashcards
What is ohms law?
I - current equals E - Voltage over R - Resistance
I= E/R
The current in a circuit is directly proportional to the emf applied to the circuit and inversely proportional to the resistance of the circuit.
Different variations of ohms law
I = E/R E = I x R R = E/I
Kirchoffs voltage and current law for series
Et = V1 + V2 + V3 It = I1 = I2 = I3 Rt = R1 + R2 + R3
Define Voltage
The potential difference in charge between two points
What is a molecule
A molecule is the smallest amount of a compound that still retains all the properties of that compound. Example - H20
Define Resistance - ohms
The opposition to current flow
Define Matter
Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space
What are 4 states of matter?
Gas, Liquids, Solids and Plasma
What is required to change matter from one state to another?
Energy
All matter is made of?
Atoms
The smallest amount of an element that still retains all the properties of that element is called an…
Atom
What is an electron?
A particle rotating in orbit around the nucleus of an atom. It has a negative electrical charge.
What is a conductor?
A material having one to three valence electrons that will easily become free electrons to transmit electricity.
What is a free electron
An electron that is dislodged from its atom.
What is an insulator?
A material having five to eight valence electrons that prevents the normal transmission of electricity.
What is an Ion?
An Atom that has gained or lost an electron.
What is a neutron?
A particle in the nucleus of an atom that has no electrical charge. However it’s mass is approximately the same as a proton.
What is a semiconductor?
A material having four valence electrons and is neither a good conductor or a good insulator
What is a valence shell?
The outermost orbit in which electrons may revolve around the nucleus of an atom.
What is the symbol for electrical charge and the unit of measurement?
The symbol is Q and the unit symbol is C for coulombs.
What is the number of electrons for one unit of charge?
6.28x10 to the power of 18
Define electric current?
It is the flow of electrons from a negatively charged point to a positively charged point
What is the symbol for current and what is the unit of measurement for current?
The symbol for current is “i” and the unit of measurement is A for ampere.
What is conventional current flow or “hole” flow?
It is the flow of electrons from a positive to a negative and is opposite to electron flow.
