serial dilutions Flashcards
why are serial dilutions done?
to obtain known concentrations of a solution
how is a serial dilution made for a ten-fold dilution?
1 ml of X solution is added to 9 ml of distilled water in a test tube
1ml of this new solution is added to 9 ml of distilled water in another test tube
this gets repeated multiple times to produce more and more dilute solutions
you have solution X of 20 mol dm-3 solution
how would you produce serial dilutions of solution X and what would the conc of the dilutions be?
take 1 ml of X and add to test tube with 9 ml of distilled water
this solution is 2 mol dm-3
BECAUSE
10 ml of dilute solution is produced with 1 ml of X so 20*0.1 = 2
then repeat this to produce rest of the serial dilutions
