Why was Russia tied to the feudal system for so long?
A
Russia was late in ending feudalism- going back to the black death, 1400s. (Black death killed 1/3 of peasants -they suddenly became more valuable).
There is no enlightenment or reformation Russia until Alex II in 1861s

Why was change required?
A
Alex II in 1861s- He thinks the system is out of date
- Especially when competing with enemies, Germany, Japan, England + French in Crimea.
Ø Agricultural system wasn't efficient- strip system- with a growing population- Industrial change- better machinery- drives peasants off the land and into factories- PROLETARIATS- Working classes and factory workers.
